Each year the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), administers the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (also know as the FIRE Act). This grant program is designed to assist rural, urban, and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. These funds are used to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, new fire apparatus, emergency medical service programs, and fire prevention and safety programs. More information regarding the 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program can be found on the USFA and FEMA website.
